The Capital Airlines Flight 67 Tragedy
Remembering a Somber Chapter of Mid-Michigan’s Past
April 6, 1958 – A Tragic Day at Tri-City Airport
On a snowy Easter Sunday evening, Capital Airlines Flight 67 tragically crashed during its final approach to Freeland’s Tri-City Airport (now MBS International Airport), killing all 47 people aboard.
The aircraft—a Vickers Viscount—encountered poor visibility, severe winds, and conditions ideal for ice buildup. Ice accumulation on the tail stabilizer and a malfunctioning stall warning system caused the plane to stall and spin before impact.
This remains one of Michigan’s most devastating aviation accidents and a deeply somber moment in the state’s history.
Honoring the Victims
In 2001, a memorial was established to honor the lives lost, ensuring that the victims—and this chapter of Mid-Michigan’s story—are never forgotten.
